May 19th further explanations and examples

Hey all!

Split Infinitives - This is when an adverb is between 'to' and a 'verb'.
Example - She used to secretly admire him ........... changed to ........She used secretly to admire him
or
You have to really watch him   ....... change to ..... You really have to watch him

Example - To quickly eat  ......  change it to ...... To eat quickly

Who or Whom?
You have to know what is the subject and what is the object

Who = subject ( This means the subject creates the central action) "Who chewed the ball?"
Whom = object (This means the object receives the central action) "The dog chewed whom?

That or Which?
You have to know or identify the non-identifying clause or the non-identifying clause

An identifying clause gives more information about the subject and therefore both 'that' and 'which' may be used.

BUT

If there is a non-identifying clause than only 'which' may be used.

Example with an identifying clause
That movie that we saw last weekend was really good.
The identifying clause is .."that we saw last weekend"

Example with a non-identifying clause
Toronto, which is heavily populated, is a multicultural city.

Good vs Well?

Good is an adjective to describe nouns
Well is an adverb to describe verbs and an adjective.

How did they play?  They played well....not  They played good because of what it modifies, which is the verb.
How are you doing? I'm doing well.
